Here is the detailed list of steps we take in planning and rolling out a new Lotus Domino Enterprise, Utility or Messaging Server:
- Determine your organization’s server needs taking into account physical topography, existing local and wide area network configuration and the functionality needed of the Lotus Domino Server.
- Develop a hierarchical name scheme that includes organization and organizational unit names. Take a look at existing directory services in your organization and decide on integration with LDAP or Windows 2000 Active Directory Services.
- Create Domino domains taking into consideration your administration needs, and how your IS team will delegate the administration of Domino users.
- Evolve an appropriate naming scheme for the Domino Directory/Domain, Servers, Users and other resources using best practices for name-to-address resolution for servers. Ensure that the DNS records for your company are the correct type for the server names.
- Determine which server services to enable. The Lotus Domino 6 server comes with the following services: • Database Replicator, Mail Router, Agent Manager, Administration Process, Calendar Connector, Schedule Manager, DOLS (Domino Off-Line Services), DIIOP CORBA Services, DECS (Domino Enterprise Connection Services), Billing, HTTP Server, IMAP Server, ISpy, LDAP Server, POP3 Server, Remote Debug Server, SMTP Server, Stats, Statistic Collector & Web Retriever. Some of these are optional services, while some are required for starting up the Domino Server.
- Setup the certificate authority for your organization – Domino server-based certification authority, or third-party. Secure the certifier ID to prevent security breaches.
- Install and set up the Domino server. Install and set up the Domino Administrator on the administrator’s machine. Connect to the Domino server from the Administrator Client and configure the Domino Server
- Complete network-related server setup, including setting up Server documents, binding to specific NIC, protocols and ports.
- If the Domino server is offering Internet services, set up Internet site documents. Test the Web Administration tool and enable or disable it based on security considerations, administration needs etc.
- Specify Administration Preferences for Domino Administrator.
- Create additional certifier IDs to support the hierarchical name scheme and set up recovery information for the certifier IDs. Add the administrator’s ID to the recovery information for the certifier IDs and then distribute the certifier IDs, as necessary, to other administrators.
- Register additional servers.
- Create a group in the Domino Directory for all administrators, and give this group Manager access to all databases on the first server.
- Install and set up additional servers. Configure Clustering if required and specify databases to be covered by clustering services. Test clustering to ensure proper failover between clustered servers
- Complete network-related server setup for each additional server.
Client Customization, Installation and User Management Tasks:
- Create policies applicable to users as either explicit or organizational policies. Policies enable organizations to distribute and control a standard set of administrative settings for user registration and setup, desktop configuration, mail archiving, and security. These include policies for user registration, setup, desktop and security requirements.
- Using the registration process creates a Person document in the Domino Directory, a user ID that is stamped with appropriate certificates and an optional mail file for each user. Bulk import users if available from another source.
- Setting up the environment for Client Installation on the desktop, including disabling anti-virus tasks, acquiring administrative privileges on local machine, creating custom files required for client installation etc.
- Decide on the type of installation appropriate for your organization: Single-user installation vs. shared network installation vs. multi-user installation.
- Create a customized installation utility by using transform files and Installshield Tuner for Lotus Notes and custom configuration files for each desktop.
- Roll out the client installation from either a central server or on individual desktops (depending on the infrastructure of your organization)
- Testing the client installation to ensure connectivity, appropriate enforcement of Policies etc.
